89 people died it seems...I hope none of our members are included. Yep, Sadly
The US had done so much for us in the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, I hope our govenment will be willing to help the victims in return...although they still have their hands tied up with the nuclear plant problem. I'd at least like to donate, if anyone knows a trustful source to send money to plz reply.

The US is like my second home country. I know these kind of disasters happen often, but I hope something can be done in the future to avoid much damage as possible. My heart is with you Missouri. Depressed Crying

I don't think we have any members from that area. I'm almost as sure we don't have any members from any of the other disaster areas either (please forgive me if I'm wrong!). Yes, I think the Missouri tornado was the most deadly, but there was an even bigger tornado a few weeks ago (F5!). And then there have been dozens of others lately as well... Oh and the Mississippi river also flooded really bad. They had to open the flood gates to spare the major cities, totally wiping out lots of farm land and small towns. Yes, the US has it's share of natural disasters lately Sad...

Thanks for the info Star85...I didn't know about the bigger tornado, and the Mississippi flooding again? Didn't that happen a few years ago, too? I'm starting to worry that maybe the Maya's were right, and the world might end up like that '2012' movie...well, if something like that has to happen someday, I hope it would at least happen after 2014 Sochi Olys. Sad

The Mississippi floods every few years, but it only flooded worse than this one time ever(and that was last time I checked. I'm not sure if they expect it to get worse still, but I think the worst is over.).

I know, I worry some about 2012 too, cause it seems like things are getting worse in the world. The thought has crossed my mind too, that if that if something big does happen in 2012, there will be no 2014 olympics, and Mao will never have another chance at gold. I almost laugh at myself, and how silly I sound, but I really have thought about this... Embarassed

Unfortunately I live right in this 'Tornado Alley' as they call it, although I do not live in Joplin.

There's always been tornadoes (the film "Twister" comes to mind, literally) where I live and just yesterday my mom and I were close to being swept up in one, as I just returned from visiting my younger brother. A hour and a half later the tornado came right where we were, although family members are okay. There was also a tornado in Minneapolis which was shocking, especially since my aunt lives there, but she was thankfully in Chicago and is currently in NY at the moment.

Last night there was only severe thunderstorms, hail, some flooding, and strong winds so not too worrisome. Although there was a brief blackout for several hours and it was highly warned not to go outside. One tree in my front yard suffered some damage, that is all. At first I thought my living room windows were going to shatter because the wind was so strong. [I can't seem to get away from tornadoes it seems. Even in college up north there were still some (albeit minor) which was terrifying to them since it's mainly just heavy blizzard/snow and rainfall.]

Anyway, it's been like this all month. I feel for those in Joplin as they are still on watch for more possible tornadoes sadly, as is here. It's quite jarring, but it should quiet down after this week. I hope.

Cloviece I'm glad your ok. I didn't realize we had anyone here so close to all the action.

Oh, and I was mistaken before. The Missouri tornado was also an F5. I believe the other F5 from a weeks ago may have been bigger or faster though... Not sure on the facts.

Cloviece it was relieving to hear you and your mom was okay from the tornado. The image of a tornado which I used to have was that in Judy Garland's 'Wizard of Oz', since we hardly ever have them in Japan and they're so small anyway. But then I saw 'Twister' and I found out how dangerous they really are...and so big! It's so surreal, air twisting around like that so powerfully, causing so much damage. Sad

Star85, I thought I was crazy too worrying about Mao losing her chance to win OGM in Sochi, whenever I imagine some major disaster happening in the world before then. But the way Mao lives, focusing on what she was born to do and putting every effort she can into it...kind of stands for how most of us are coping with life, and nature taking all that away in a second or two, like it did to the people in the Northeast of Japan on 3/11, makes me really uncomfortable with life itself. There's no point in talking what's fair or not about natural disasters, but I wouldn't have been able to take it if Mao were one of the victims in that earthquake and tsunami. People like her who're living their lives the best they can shouldn't die like that. Even if humans are only little worthless parasites on this planet, there are people like Mao who prove we can be more than that. Smile

I used to have a friend in Missouri, but just discovered she lived very far from Joplin, so hopefully she is fine Smile

Do you live by any chance anywhere near Columbia, Missouri? Very Happy I lived there for several years. I live in Cincinnati now, which is not that far away, so we've been getting some of those storms too. No tornadoes thankfully..

Cloviece, I'm so relieved to hear that you're fine. I was horrified to hear about what happened in Joplin and I really hope that the recovery and rebuilding process goes smoothly. I hope that none of our members were harmed or knew anyone that was hurt..
